Guardamar residents are busy preparing what will be ‘A Tribute to Robert Burns’ – the great Scottish poet who has been celebrated throughout the world this year on his 250th anniversary.
The planning group of both Spaniards and Scots have pulled together a programme of music and song to celebrate the bard’s life – and guest have been busy rehearsing their recitals for the big event. The pipes will be present, of course, as will the haggis and the whisky.
As Willie Hume, the group’s Co-ordinator explained ‘ We want to make it a very special event – not only for the Scots who will be present – but also for our Spanish guests who will join us in reciting, playing the bagpipes and community singing. The Celebration forms part of the annual festivities world wide and we hope to create a bit of interest in his works and legacy here in Guardamar.
The Tribute evening will take place on January 25th in the Hotel Meridional in Guardamar, where a meal will be served in his honour. Tickets for the event are still available and are priced at 20€ . For further details contact Willy on 672503339 or Maureen on 96 572 44 88 or 618180290.

Cantabile Singers, October 2009
Cantabile Singers are a ladies’ choir consisting of 28 singers who sing a new repertoire of 56 songs (and the same number for Christmas, including everyone’s favourite carols). They are trained by their Musical Director, Jen Morton, with the help of our brilliant new pianist, Christine Eames, an experienced teacher and professional piano player. Christine and her husband, Roger, also play jazz every Monday evening at El Pescadito Restaurant in Mil Palmeras.
Our song repertoire includes classical and romantic composers such as Bach, Bizet, Elgar, Mozart, Rodrigo, Schubert and Sibelius to more modern works by Karl Jenkins and John Rutter. We also sing songs from the shows such as Les MisĂ©rables, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats and Phantom of the Opera and Rogers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific and Oklahoma. Film themes also figure - Exodus and Lord of Rings being two favourites, along with Negro Spirituals, modern popular, Habaneras and traditional songs.
Training CDs are produced to help our ladies learn the music.
We practise at Villa Augusto Residence, Guardamar, near Portico Mar Restaurant, opposite the big mast off the N332, on Fridays from 4.00 to 6.00 pm.
We have a really colourful uniform: sparkly turquoise jackets over black or white top and trousers (depending on the season); also a second uniform – the same base with black embroidered shawls.
Concerts:
We perform 3 or 4 concerts each year, several of which are to raise money for charity. In the last 12 months alone we have made donations to: The Alzheimers Association, the Butterfly Children and the Church of the Immaculate Conception.
At Christmas we are usually invited to put on a traditional concert of Christmas music, carols etc by clubs in the region. This year we have four venues lined up and shall participate in the Ceremony of Carols in the Immaculate Conception Church Square in Torrevieja on December 11th.
The general public may hear our Christmas music at the Café Royal, next door to Portico Mar Restaurant, Guardamar on Friday 18th December at 3pm.
Cantabile is a friendly, sociable, dedicated group of ladies who really enjoy their singing and performing.
I have some excellent singers already in the choir but I want more!

GET STONED IN GA!
Hailstones hammered Gran Alacant on Sunday the 20th of September wrecking cars and property. The hailstones which were roughly the size of a marble hit the Urb around 5 o'clock and preceded the heavy rain which flooded parts of the area, blocking roads and flooding basements - especially in Don Pueblo phase 3.
HELCOPTER DRAMA IN GRAN ALACANT
Ambulance crews and local police were first on the scene, along with JD Editor Dave Bull, last Saturday when a paraglider crashed into the cliffs at Gran Alacant injuring his legs and leaving him stuck on the side of a ravine with no way for medics to reach him.
The paraglider, who was at least two hundred metres from the road but in very tough terrain, was conscious throughout the ordeal which involved calling out the Fire Brigade helicopter from its base at Mutxamiel in Alicante.
Having seen their colleague crash land amongst the rocks and boulders that pepper the sierra at Gran Alacant, his colleagues managed to reach him and found him in a great deal of pain but surprisingly not too badly injured considering the way he had come down. Within ten minutes the rotors of the chopper could be heard and soon enough we saw it rise from below the cliffs and circle us once before the medic was lowered down to the injured man. Very quickly they rose again, with the paraglider strapped firmly to the line, and winched him inside for the short hop to where an ambulance crew awaited.
All in all the whole thing from the accident occurring to his safe arrival in the ambulance was less than twenty minutes, these guys are a credit to us and a pleasure to watch at work, it must be said.
The paraglider is said to be recovering from cuts, bruises and shock.
